New report highlights "dire need for change" on tinnitus
This first week of February, 2025, tinnitus is being showcased in all its annoying, debilitating awfulness. Recognition by several organisations of a need for an awareness drive has spawned Tinnitus Week, marked by the publication of survey results showing, among other challenges, low private-sector priority for tinnitus.
The leading charity Tinnitus UK has marked the start of Tinnitus Week with the publication of a comprehensive report, Ringing the Alarm: The tinnitus care crisis, exposing alarming gaps in tinnitus care and professional training across the NHS and private audiology sectors.
Last November, hundreds of UK audiologists answered a call to respond to Tinnitus UK as part of a survey, the results of which suggest a significant lack of priority for hearing conditions in domestic healthcare. This includes an impact on mental health because of waits for hearing aid assistance, which can be as long as three years.
