NYC: most accessible place in US for the hearing impaired

According to the article, the title as America’s most accessible city for people with hearing loss can be awarded to NYC for a wide range of reasons. Services do, however, vary by site based on each venue’s internal standards. More progress needs to be made because the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is not widely respected, but New York is leading the way.

Hearing access is available at many of the city’s theaters along Broadway, such as the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, the Gershwin Theater, or the Richard Rodgers Theater. Access is available at many of New York’s museums and stadiums. Some of the equipped sites include world-class museums like the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan, and the American Museum of Natural History, or iconic sites like Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty.

Communication Access Real-time Translation (CART), also called real-time captioning, is widespread and American Sign Language may be offered. Other examples of hearing-impaired access include the subway transport system’s information booths and call boxes, as well as the city’s state-of-the-art Taxis of Tomorrow, which are equipped with a loop system for passengers with hearing loss.
