UK new build materials and design need to isolate noise better - study
Recent research has produced a number of studies on the negative effects on mental and physical health of being exposed to noise. While we can isolate ourselves from loud sounds, aspects such as materials and design in dwelling construction require input at local or national government level and from planning officials.
Calls for greater quality of building and materials have followed a survey in North West UK locations by the Danish multinational manufacturer of mineral wool products, Rockwool.
The Manchester survey recorded that two-thirds of respondents said they would be deterred from buying or renting a property with noisy neighbours or high noise levels from an airport, railway, or similar. Over half of respondents have reported stress (57%), anxiety (54%), or physical health problems (51%) such as high blood pressure due to noise levels, while 39% of respondents were concerned about heart disease, and 37% about strokes from noise levels. Similar concerns were expressed by those responding to the same survey carried out in Bury and Wigan.
In Manchester, 55% of residents who responded to the survey said they had thought about investing in changes such as external wall insulation to reduce noise pollution. And almost a fifth (19%) of Manchester residents said they were prepared to move out...
