The audiology year 2025 began in the UK with something of a wind shear. After a year of campaigning essentially aimed at coaxing an incoming UK Government to favour greater involvement for the private sector in primary care audiology, the new Health and Social Care Secretary made an announcement that has, frankly, left everyone wondering.

Everyone is wondering what ropes to pull on. The debate was not directly addressed. It is as if one side called for fish for dinner, and the other side meat, and then the ship's cook emerges from the galley and says "Here you are: TV dinners!" Instead, businesses around the world now have a green light to sell OTC hearing aids here in the UK.
