Long-time tinnitus sufferer is the new CEO of top charity striving to end the condition

Tinnitus UK has announced the appointment of Alex Brooks-Johnson as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective September 2024.

Alex has a decade of leadership experience in the voluntary sector, joining from Guild Care, where he has served as CEO for five years. But he also takes over the post having personal awareness of what tinnitus means to the one in seven UK citizens who suffer its deleterious impact. He has lived with tinnitus for ten years.

His appointment comes after a period in which the world-leading charity has struggled for lasting leadership since David Stockdale departed in June 2022 after 12 successful years. His replacement, Deanne Thomas, held the CE post briefly, from October 2022 to January 2023, and her succesor Caroline Savage left the post after one year, in February 2024. Robin Greenwood, former full-time international programmes director of the poverty-fighting charity Christian Aid, held the fort as interim CEO from April of this year.

New CEO Alex Brooks-Johnson said: “It’s an honour to take on the role of CEO at Tinnitus UK. As someone who has lived with tinnitus for 10 years, I understand the challenges it brings. I am deeply committed to using my leadership experience to further the charity’s mission of providing support and hope to others living with tinnitus.”

Lynne Gillon, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Tinnitus UK, commented: “Tinnitus UK is committed to advancing both public awareness and scientific understanding of tinnitus. With Alex’s leadership, we are confident that we will continue to make meaningful strides in these areas.”
