Genetics and clinical practice updates stand out in 2024 British Academy of Audiology Conference programme

Registration is now open for the British Academy of Audiology Annual Conference 2024, with an early bird booking option open until September 24.

The BAA’s 20th annual event will take place over two days  – November  21 and 22 – at the Telford International Centre in Shropshire, UK.

 

Speaker Highlights include Cambridge gene therapy breakthrough star

 

Clinical leaders and expert research professionals dominate the lecture offering in the full programme, with the BAA aiming to provide clinic-changing presentations across a wide range of audiology topics. Keynote speakers include Dr. Brent Edwards, who will present the Adrian Davis LectureRevolutionising Audiological Care Through Innovation in Clinical Tools and Treatment Strategies.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Trust Professor Manohar Bance

Professor Manohar Bance, chief investigator of a recent successful gene therapy trial that meant a baby girl born deaf could hear unaided for the first time, will present the Bamford Lecture – A new era in the treatment of genetic hearing loss – genomic therapies.

Other invited keynote speakers include; Rebecca Bennett, Senior Research Audiologist, National Acoustic Laboratories, who will talk about Managing the social and emotional wellbeing impacts of hearing loss: Interventions and approaches that can be implemented to augment current clinical practice, and Dr. Samantha Lear, Senior Policy Advisor for NDCS and Crystal Rolfe Director of Strategy with the RNID, who will speak about Deaf Awareness – what we all need to know.

Key sessions across the two days include; mild and unilateral hearing loss; leadership, change management and influencing growing and maintaining the workforce; optimally aided; specialist microtia and atresia MDT clinics; dizziness and balance disorders; occupational stress and looking after your own wellbeing provision; cochlear implants; tinnitus and hyperacusis; dementia and hearing loss, and auditing for confidence. Dr. David Maidment will deliver a full monty session stripping hearing back to health!

BAA Conference abstracts and awards

 

The BAA has allocated nine free paper presentations in the programme. These presentations will be chosen from submitted abstracts. The submission deadline is Monday, August 19.

Nominations are invited to put forward colleagues and peers for one of the BAA awards. “We do love to take the time to acknowledge those individuals and teams who have excelled, or shown exceptional commitment to the Audiology profession, over the past year,” the BAA states. All entries must be submitted by Monday September 24.

 

Key BAA Conference deadline dates

 

Early bird registration: Monday September 24.

The Academy recommends booking by September 24 to benefit from the early bird discount. Prices will rise from Tuesday September 25.

Abstract deadline: Monday August 19 by midnight.

Award nomination deadline: Monday September 24.

The BAA points out that if you are not a member and are planning on attending conference, it will be cheaper to join as a member and come to conference than to pay the non-member rate. For more info click here.
